Male Tamarin monkey dies in Nandankanan Zoological Park

Bhubaneswar: A male Tamarin monkey died at the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP), located in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Friday.

The animal was placed in the quarantine ward of the 'veterinary unit' of Nandankanan. While the monkey escaped from its enclosure six months ago, he was tracked back to the zoo.The zoo authorities brought a pair of Tamarin monkeys including the male Tamarin last year from Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

Usually, the squirrel-sized Tamarins are found in southern Central America, northwestern Colombia and the Amazon basin. They appear black, brown and white with moustache-like hairs on their face. Their body size ranges from 13 to 30 cm and they weigh from 220 to 900 gram. They have lower canine teeth that are clearly longer than the incisors.
